The ABC’s of Creating an LGBTQ-Friendly Classroom 365 Stevens North - Dr. Stephen Paparo, clinician Though the music classroom is often regarded as a “safe space,” those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ) often fell marginalized and excluded. This session will: (1) help teachers better understand their students’ sexual and gender identities, (2) engage participants in a discussion of ways to handle LGBTQ-related classroom scenarios, and (3) share best-practices for creating welcoming and inclusive classrooms and schools for all students. Sightreading 101: Improving Music Literacy and Sightreading Skills via Assessment 100 Neville - Dr. Ed Huckeby, clinician This clinic provides insights into making SIGHTREADING PREPARATION a structured part of the band curriculum. Dr. Huckeby will provide an introduction to specific methodological approaches to prepare students for efficient sightreading and enhance music literacy skills. Topics covered include an overview of defined learning outcomes, a review of specific sequential and progressive examples, and a description of how specially designed assessments can be integrated into the band curriculum to assist in meeting appropriate local, state and national standards.
