The ABC’s of Creating an LGBTQ-Friendly Classroom
365 Stevens North - Dr. Stephen Paparo, clinician
Though the music classroom is often regarded as a “safe space,”
those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer
(LGBTQ) often fell marginalized and excluded. This session will: (1)
help teachers better understand their students’ sexual and gender
identities, (2) engage participants in a discussion of ways to handle
LGBTQ-related classroom scenarios, and (3) share best-practices
for creating welcoming and inclusive classrooms and schools for all
students.
Sightreading 101: Improving Music Literacy and
Sightreading Skills via Assessment
100 Neville - Dr. Ed Huckeby, clinician
This clinic provides insights into making SIGHTREADING
PREPARATION a structured part of the band curriculum. Dr.
Huckeby will provide an introduction to specific methodological
approaches to prepare students for efficient sightreading and
enhance music literacy skills. Topics covered include an overview
of defined learning outcomes, a review of specific sequential and
progressive examples, and a description of how specially designed
assessments can be integrated into the band curriculum to assist in
meeting appropriate local, state and national standards.
