Transgender Singers in the High School Choral Ensemble

More and more transgender students are revealing themselves in
today’s classroom. How can the choral music educator create a
learning environment in which transgender students can
productively participate in the ensemble while still allowing them to
affirm their gender identities through their voices? In this session,
I will (a) present my research findings on this topic, (b) discuss my
approach in my own program, and (c) facilitate a discussion with
attendees with time for Q & A.

Participants will experience movement activities intended for
students in upper elementary and middle school. Playground games
and song-dances work great to further develop beat-ful skills with
fun challenges to coordinate the beat with objects and people.
A Concept Based Jazz Ensemble Rehearsal - 2

In this session Mr. Massey will illustrate a variety of practical
approaches to use in jazz band rehearsals that teach long term jazz
concepts and strengthen ensemble-playing fundamentals. George
Stevens Academy’s award-winning jazz ensemble will take part in a
demonstration rehearsal, led by Mr. Massey, which will address
concepts such as time, rhythm, improvisation, jazz theory,
interpretation, articulation tone quality, balance and blend.
