association. In 2007, MENC celebrated one hundred years of advancing music education.”( From NAfME website)
In 1915, music supervisors in Maine met to discuss the possibility of forming their own organization. This was formalized in 1917, making Maine the oldest state music education association in the country by 15 years. Through several name changes and executive boards, MMEA remains a strong advocate for music programs throughout the state, with its leaders testifying many times in Legislative Education Committee hearings; speaking out at school board meetings; rallying parents and other community members when necessary. Maine music educators are a proud group, leading the way in providing Maine students with a quality music education!
