lake. They met that summer but it took 9 years of an off and on relationship before they were married.
Her education continued with another transfer, this time to Bowling Green State University, still in Elementary Education but eventually changing majors once again back to Music. She sang in the A Capella & Treble Choirs, traveling with both. It was at Bowling Green that she met Tom( Tim) Conway- yes THAT Tim Conway- and along with two other students formed The Group, a combination of music and comedy. After graduation, The Group went back to the Bronx to make it big. Just as it is today, breaking into the entertainment business was not easy. You had to be a member of the union in order to get a job and you couldn’ t join the union unless you had a job. They decided that, perhaps, it wasn’ t to be and so Charlotte stayed in NYC preparing for her new employment in the fall and the“ men” returned to Ohio. The only one to continue the pursuit in show business was Tom, who changed his first name to Tim since there was someone else with his name, and he started his career in radio-- the rest is history.
Charlotte’ s first teaching job was in White Plains, NY at a Junior High. She taught General Music and Chorus, Choral Club, and a 3 part A Capella Choir. Later, after establishing herself, she started a 4 part SATB chorus of 9th graders She taught there from 1956 until 1960.
She had her first great adventure in 1959, traveling with a friend on the old Liberté ship to Europe. They spent the summer touring the UK, France, Belgium, Austria, Italy and Spain. At the same time, Hal was working on his doctorate at New York University in a lab and decided that he needed to take a summer off from the lab and work with people. He was offered a job as head counselor at a girl’ s camp on Brandy Pond in Naples. At the end of the summer he was told about an opening at Gorham State--applied and was offered a job teaching math at Gorham State College. Later, that was expanded to include his field in Science and then learning theory.
They married in 1960 and Charlotte accepted a job at King Junior High in Portland where she stayed for one year, after which their first child, Tom, was born. Two and a half years later, Heidi was born. During that time Hal finished his Doctorate in Education at Boston University. In 1966 Hal was invited to go to the University of California at Berkeley for one year to be part of a writing team for a national Science Curriculum. They spent all but the last month of the year with no car and walked to different areas of San Francisco each weekend.
