Maine , the northeastern most U . S . state , borders New Hampshire to the west , the Gulf of Maine to the southeast , and the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec to the northeast and northwest , respectively . Maine is the largest state in New England by total area , nearly larger than the combined area of the remaining 5 states . Of the 50 U . S . states , it is the 12th-smallest by area , the 9th-least populous , the 13th-least densely populated , and the most rural . Maine ’ s capital is Augusta , and its most populous city is Portland , with a total population of 68,390 ( 2023 estimate ). Maine ’ s population was 1.39 million in 2023 and is projected to grow to 1.46 million by 2028 .
Maine summer high temperatures reach the 80s along the coast and up to the 90s inland , with nights normally comfortably cool . Some severe thunderstorms occur between May and August . Winters are generally cold , but with few prolonged cold spells . Average annual snowfall in Maine is 50 to 70 inches along the coast and 60-110 inches inland . January is normally the snowiest month , with an average of about 20 inches . Precipitation is generally even throughout the year . Maine has three defined Climatological Divisions ; the Coastal , which extends for about twenty miles inland along the length of the coast , is tempered by the ocean , resulting in lower summer and higher winter temperatures than interior zones , while the Northern Interior - furthest from the ocean and with the highest elevations , occupies nearly 60 % of the State ’ s area and has a continental climate .

The per capita personal income is about $ 63,000 , ranking it 30th nationally . Maine has witnessed a dramatic shift in some of its top industries over the past several decades . Once known primarily for “ heritage ” industries like fishing , logging , agriculture , shipbuilding , farming , and others , tourism and technology are shifting jobs in Maine . The state is transforming from making goods to providing services . Tourism and outdoor recreation play a major and increasingly important role in Maine ’ s economy . The state is a popular destination for sport hunting ( particularly deer , moose , and bear ), sport fishing , snowmobiling , skiing , boating , camping , and hiking , among other activities .
Maine ’ s output of goods and services grew at a 4.4 % annual rate in the fourth quarter of 2023 . That was the fastest rate of economic growth of any state in New England . It also was ahead of the national growth rate of 3.4 %. The federal Bureau of Economic Analysis reports the fastest-growing sector of the Maine economy was retail , followed by the agriculture , forestry , fishing and hunting sector , and the nondurable goods manufacturing sector .
