Spotlight On Luke M. Reid
LUKE M. REID PARTNER
HOW DID YOU GET INTO MARITIME LAW? I attended the U. S. Coast Guard Academy, served at sea on a ship after graduation, and served in a variety of marine safety engineering and legal assignments during the remainder of my Coast Guard career. While on active duty, I advised senior commanders on maritime operations and the enforcement of international and domestic laws applicable to U. S. and foreign vessels. So, my transition to private practice as a maritime lawyer was really a natural progression from my Coast Guard career.
WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU FOLLOWING AT THE MOMENT? The maritime industry is at the cusp of transformational change in several respects. Decarbonization of international shipping, digitalization of all aspects of maritime operations, and the increased prevalence of automation and autonomous vessels are clear trends in the maritime sector. These transformational changes will undoubtedly disrupt the“ status quo”— and will add even greater complexity to the operational, business, and legal risks facing our clients.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO OUTSIDE OF YOUR LEGAL PRACTICE?
I love the outdoors— hiking, biking, and spending time with my family and friends( and my two labrador retrievers, Jetty and Summer!) I am also an avid, lifelong soccer player who continues to play year-round, even in the dead of winter in New England! p – 2025 BLANK ROME LLP
