Minnesota has an international reputation for its highly variable climate and extremes ( 114 ° F in summer and -60 ° F in winter ). In the 19th and early 20th centuries it was labeled by many writers and journalists as the “ American Siberia .” Our history is therefore loaded with stories of people coping with challenging storms and climate-related events .
