RUGBY:

7s Tournament - Plate Winners 2014|Cup 3rd Place 2015

The annual charity inter-mural rugby 7s tournament organised by the UWRFC is a pinnacle of many a sporting calendar at the University of Warwick. Hosted at Earlsdon RFC in Coventry, the tournament seeks to fundraise in memory of former UWRFC member Archie Wellbelove, who was victim of a tragic accident in 2012. Giving the chance for sports clubs at Warwick to showcase their physicality and adept skill set, the competition raises over £700 each year.

For the past 2 years, the UWMHC have shown a consistently strong performance, turning many a head with their progress in the competition. 2014 saw the Magmen claim silverware in the plate competition. A baptism of fire saw the boys concede to a strong rugby side in the pool stages 22-7, followed by an emphatic 35-0 victory over the Men’s Squash Club, with tries coming from Alexander Evans, Casey Dennis, and Matthew Howard. Subsequent rounds saw strong victories over Men’s Tennis (28-7) and a place in the plate final versus an adept Rugby Freshers side. A strong display of pace and physicality combined with impressive tactical awareness saw the Magmen run out 35-12 winners. Edward Zeidler’s Sonny Bill-esque offload putting Casey Dennis in under the uprights claimed highlight of the day. A successful day for the UWMHC saw the club claim silverware, a feat they were keen to build upon in the 2015 tournament.

On 6th May 2015, the tournament was back. A year’s worth of gym work and early morning fitness was about to be put to the test. But the hope of a light run around against Surf and Mixed Hockey was short lived. Recognised for their ability to ‘hack it’, the Magmen found themselves playing solely rugby teams throughout the day!
