Earth Day- Sunday 22nd April

Earth Day is an international event celebrated on 22nd April in order to raise awareness for the importance of environmental protection. Every year, more than 1 billion people in 192 countries take part in what is now the largest civic-focused day of action in the world.

The theme of this year’s Earth Day is ending plastic pollution, an issue that is causing extreme damage to marine ecosystems worldwide. Plastic pollution even has a direct effect on human health - toxins from plastics contaminate fish, meaning that these toxins can then be passed on to us through eating seafood.

Helping to end this problem doesn’t have to mean litter picking on the beach or campaigning on the streets for an end to plastic products. There are lots of small ways that you can contribute every day, such as:

- Using a reusable water bottle, lunch box or coffee cup.

- Avoiding products with excessive packaging, e.g. buy loose fruit and vegetables rather than pre-packaged ones - they are often cheaper, too.

- Saying no to plastic straws and disposable cutlery.

- Using a reusable shopping bag.

- Making sure to put any plastic packaging you do use in the bin so that it does not end up in the ocean.
