Gardiner Greene, a Boston lawyer and financier, established National Geographic Magazine in 1888.
Once established, he handed over control to Alexander Graham Bell.
Instead of issuing subscriptions, Bell came up with an disruptive idea: those interested in receiving the magazine would become members of the National Geographic Society, rather than simply subscribers.
