ALEXIS SERGI AGE 12 By Ezequiel Gonzalez, Calvary Chapel Chino Valley IGNITE Class 5 – Team Guatemala A lexis Sergi is 12 years old. He lives alone with his mother, in Antigua, Guatemala, and he is in 7th grade at Liceo Antigueño. What I noticed most about this young man is that he is a great example to the other kids. It is easy to see that he is a natural leader because when he speaks, people listen. What is hard to get your head around is that a boy so young can be such a strong leader. Alexis has probably been one of the biggest influences on my personal growth. He has challenged me – in a good way – like no other student I worked with in my time serving in Guatemala. In our times together I had the privilege to watch him grow as well. From the moment I first saw him on the property, I noticed that there was something different about him. Although it took some time to develop the relationship, I can truly say we became very close and he is one of the biggest parts of what I miss since leaving Guatemala. He told me that one of his favorite aspects about coming to the Potter’s Field Kids program is all the things that he has learned about God. He really looked forward to learning more and more each week. His favorite memory verse is Proverbs 1:8 - “My son, hear the instruction of your father, and do not forsake the law of your mother.” It was fitting that he picked that verse because it is obvious that he is a very obedient boy. In addition to the spiritual growth I saw in Alexis, I also noticed that he improved his grades since being part of the tutoring class, which is one of the additional programs offered through Potter’s Field. He was, and still is, consistent in coming and was very attentive while he was in his classes. He showed improvement in a very short amount of time and it was encouraging to see him picking up the material so quickly. Alexis shared with me that one of the most important lessons that he learned through his time at Potter’s Field Kids was to value the things that he has and to make sure to thank God for everything. I truly feel that the opportunity to be a part of Alexis’ life and the plan that God is unfolding for him was a gift from God to me. My life has been and will continue to be impacted by this young man and his intense desire to grow in his love for God and to seek Him with all his heart. I can’t help but wonder what his legacy will one day be and it is just such a huge blessing to know that I had a small part in shaping his future. That alone was reason enough to give God these 365 days in IGNITE and I am grateful to everyone who helped me be here through your faithful support and prayers. 8
