BOXING CLINIC, AGUADA
Former WBO Champions, Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. and Alfredo “Salsero” Escalera with Orlando Cruz and Chelo Gonzalez
took part of the boxing clinic at the school, where the message was clear, “Keep away from drugs, obey your parents
and teachers, study hard and make sports part of your daily routine. This is the road to success.” Also, present were
boxers Felix Verdejo and Janiell Rivera, trainers Ricky Marquez, Andres and Julio Ortiz, Carlos Velez, officials Jose H.
Rivera, Robert Ramirez Jr, and Cesar Ramos, WBO board members, P. R. Best Boxing VP, Peter Rivera and Senator
Luis Daniel Muñiz with senate youths.
Special recognitions
Former WBO Mini Flyweight Champion, Alex Sanchez, who successfully defended his title six times from 1995 to
1997 and now heads the Los Caobos Boxing Gym in Ponce where he trains and lends his continuous support to the
young generation, received from WBO President Valcarcel a shining new belt to replace his old one. He also received
a honorary plaque celebrating his commitment to the youth of Ponce. Ponce Mayor, Maria “Mayita” Melendez,
was present, as was London Olympic Medallist Javier Culson, former member of the National Basketball Team,
Javier “Tonito” Colon, and other sports celebraties and leaders of Ponce. Championship Committee Chairman,
Luis Batista Salas, Ratings Committee Chairman, Luis Perez, and Treasurer, Adolfo “Fito” Flores were also present.
Government Representative, Jose “Nuno” Lopez also received an honorary plaque for his support and collaboration
with the world of boxing.
