In Action :

In the summer of 2023 , I traveled to four different countries in Central Asia through a non-profit organization called GEEO that helps educators travel abroad so that they can learn more about different cultures to share with their students . I was joined on my trip by teachers from all around the United States . The places I traveled were on the continent of Asia , which is Earth ’ s largest continent . The four countries I visited , however , are some of the most sparsely populated countries in Asia . I went to Kyrgyzstan , Kazakhstan , Tajikistan , and Uzbekistan . -Stan is a suffix in the Persian language that means “ place of ,” so Uzbekistan means “ place of the Uzbeks .”

Throughout history , Central Asia has been a crossroads for trade and cultural exchange . It was an important part of the ancient Silk Road . When I heard of this opportunity , I immediately thought of the fourth-grade curriculum , which studies The Silk Road and culminates with an exciting trek throughout Saint David ’ s as boys gather by “ caravans ” to collect and trade goods . I wondered how I could contribute as an art teacher .
The Silk Road was not actually one road , but rather a network of trade routes that connected Asia with Europe for several centuries . The Silk Road originated in China over 2,000 years ago . The Chinese emperor wanted to establish trade links with the civilizations of Central Asia and beyond . The primary goods traded along the route were silk from China , precious metals and gems , spices , textiles , and various agricultural products . Beyond its economic significance , the Silk Road fostered an extensive cultural exchange . As merchants , travelers , and explorers journeyed along the route , they also carried with them their languages , religions , philosophies , and art . This exchange resulted in a cross-pollination of ideas and contributed to the spread of Buddhism , Islam , Christianity , and other faiths across Asia . One of my main philosophies as an art teacher is to bridge the gap between cultures through a global lens and bring advanced understanding of a unit to life through personal experiences .
