On August 14 , 2020 , President Donald Trump signed the “ Safeguarding America ’ s First Responders Act ” extending death and disability benefits under the Public Safety Officers ’ Benefits ( PSOB ) who die or become injured as a result of COVID-19 . For purposes of death and disability benefits , this bill creates a general presumption that a public safety officer who contracts the disease did so as a result while on-duty . This eliminates the burden of proof from an officer or family survivor having to know where the officer contracted the virus

The PSOB will process all claims submitted for death , disability and education benefits for public safety officers and survivors of public safety officers who are killed or injured in the line of duty . At the present time , the one lump sum , tax free death benefit is $ 365,670.00 . Required forms for filing are located on their website
