Welcome to Magazine Editing and Writing 3360 – Fall 2014 Instructor: Karen Pluemer E-mail: [email protected] Phone number: 608-342-1868 Office – 331 Warner Hours: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday – 10 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday – 10 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 2:50 p.m. TEXTBOOK AND MATERIALS  Our textbook is created in joomag.com and we will be using magazines as our textbook to analyze writing styles and market expectations.  Handouts in class and via joomag.com – keep these all semester  Portfolio – a three-ring binder to organize handouts  Portfolio – a three-ring binder to organize returned assignments and to turn in as a Final Portfolio  YOUR CHOICE OF MAGAZINE – You will write for and submit to this magazine. Read at least two consecutive copies.  Your own LAPTOP for in-class work days. (You may also borrow a laptop from the department or you may use a computer in a lab.) OPTIONAL RESOURCES  The Elements of Style by Strunk and White  Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life by Anne Lamott COURSE OBJECTIVES  Strong writing skills – we will workshop your writing skills so that, as a professional writer, you feel confident writing whatever is asked of you.  Solid marketing skills – we will learn and discuss how to sell your writing to various markets, including magazine, newspapers, and publishing companies.  Job opportunities – we will briefly discuss the job opportunities available for writers and editors.  Publish an e-magazine – we will conceive, write, design, and e-publish a magazine CATALOG DESCRIPTION An advanced writing and editing course concentrating on planning, creating, and evaluating written copy for print and online magazines. Emphasizes both preparing the student’s work for trade publications, and studying and practicing the processes of those publications. 2
