The foundation
that defines
communication as a science is established from
the evaluation of its structure and function.
Communication is considered a fundamental element in the life of every
being, since it is part of every institution and normative system. It is the
verbal and non-verbal symbolic, most representative of social
interaction.
Communication studies have gained scientific value over the mass
media, since the scientific position in front of them cannot be
approached from a single study. It therefore requires the contribution of
other disciplines, such as pedagogy, linguistics, philosophy, sociology,
history and psychology.
One could call a scientific study, the set of
researches carried out in relation to a field of
study. Theorists such as Shannon, Laswell,
Lazarsfeld and Matterlart, among others,
devoted part of their lives to the observation
and study of the communication process
among human beings. From this, they realized
the capacity of the human being for action and
thought. Studies that set the tone for initiating
various scientific research focused on
communication.
The mass media, intra-personal communication and the way in which
social integration originates are some of the many objects of
communication study. The field of study of communication is very
broad, but today it is basic to understanding the nature of societies.
Communication focuses on the study of social interaction and
relationship; the starting point that consolidates this knowledge as an
object of study is born from the perspective of various social and non
social disciplines. The perspective of communication as a science has its
origins since the emergence of humanity itself.
