” The growing phalanx of opponents has always made us strong.”
Uli Hoeneß alised this when he landed his first major trophy with Bayern, the DFB Cup, in 1998. The Brazilian recalls:“ I wanted to party – and was shocked when we didn‘ t celebrate properly.“ Missing out on the championship – promoted side Kaiserslautern had snatched the title away from Bayern – put a dampener on the mood in Munich.“ Mehmet Scholl said to me:’ Giovane, of course it‘ s nice to win the DFB Cup, but we‘ re already thinking about the championship next year.’“ It was an important lesson for Elber at the time.“ At Bayern, you can never rest on your laurels or take it easy for a year or two. No! You can always win more.“ As he knows today,“ there is no maximum at Bayern.“ FC Bayern‘ s hunger, which Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Müller once brought to the club, has never been sated. This legacy has been passed down from generation to generation. And so the winner’ s gene became part of the club. Over the years, it evolved to become the core of“ Mia san mia”. Consequently, the targets for the season are the same every year. Paul Breitner lists them:“ First of all, the Bundesliga, secondly the Champions League, and if that doesn‘ t work out, at least the DFB Cup. Always the same – now, in five, and in ten years‘ time too.“
Uli Hoeneß celebrated many great victories with Bayern on the pitch, and even more later as part of the club management.
