The goal was just ONE OF THREE SCORED in 27 BL games. In Ligue 1, he scored 156 times in 270 games.

“ Of course I have fond memories of that goal at the Olympiastadion, it was certainly one of the best goals I ever scored. However, I scored a few goals like that, both for Marseille and for the national team, and they even got a nickname: the‘ Papinade‘. That was kind of my trademark. I consistently practised volleys in training, but it’ s also about having that instinct and coolness. I was also on the end of a perfectly timed cross from Markus Babbel for that goal. Everything was just perfect. I didn‘ t think at all, it was 100 % spontaneous. As soon as you start thinking, even for a fraction of a second, it‘ s impossible for an overhead kick to succeed. I also remember well how the Südkurve exploded with joy when the ball hit the back of the net. It gave me real goosebumps! I felt particularly good that night after being out of action for more than eight months due to a cruciate ligament rupture and also felt like I was getting back to top form bit by bit. It was my first start too, which gave me a sense of freedom. The fact that I trusted myself to attempt an overhead kick was also a nod to my physical condition: that I was back. After a goal like that you feel joy, emotion, the adrenalin rush is enormous. The fact that people still talk to me about this special goal makes me happy. I‘ m proud of it, just as I’ m proud of the fact it was voted‘ Goal of the Year‘.“
