Management Paradigms and Risk Management

Beyond what you might think of the singer of a successful rock band, Bruce is a brilliant man, with a clear and simple way of seeing things. This makes his advice and experiences invaluable to those who are looking for inspiration to embark on a new venture of any kind. In terms of his approach to business, he emphasizes the important of risk management, and of being vigilant in the face of success and comfort. He tells us: “At one of my recent talks in Norway, where full employment is a reality and nobody is worried about losing their job, I realized that that’s where we need to emphasize this, since the risk isn’t there to drive new development and entrepreneurship”. When the conversation turns to the much-discussed decline of the once-profitable record industry, he takes and looks at my first cassette, which I have brought along as a token of my years as a fan. “The record companies didn’t see the paradigm shift coming. They didn’t manage the risk of change; they didn’t innovate. They got so comfortable, with millions coming in from sales, that they weren’t able to see the emergence of new technologies and new demands from their clients, which eventually devastated their entire model”. With a smile, he puts the cassette down, and concludes that the idea of managing risks and searching constantly for new opportunities is what spurs change, through entrepreneurship and innovation.

After almost 40 minutes of conversation about aviation and Bruce’s experiences, photos and a few autographed souvenirs, he invites us to his show and sees us off warmly. The only thing that remains is to make the necessary arrangements for a possible future trip to Chile as a speaker.

I have the sensation of having been in the presence of one of the iconic figures of our time, a genius, a visionary and an entrepreneur in the broadest sense of the word. As we say goodbye, waiting for the elevator, I have a sense that Bruce will be back in Chile again through CSA Speaker UK.

As a final note, I would like to thank Dave for his patience and good will in making this encounter happen. Meeting Bruce has been an experience that, without any doubt, we will remember for the rest of our lives.
