Madison County , while growing , is still dominated by rural areas .
So , when harvest season comes around , you still have to be on the watch for tractors in the road and the inevitable dust brought by cutting hay .
Agriculture plays a key role in our county and this is the season to celebrate the fruits of all the labor done in the hot , steaming months of summer .
Fall is here , and with this issue of the magazine , we wanted to explore and celebrate the connections agriculture plays in our lives .
As we continue to explore life in post-pandemic years , the importance of our local food system has remained a hot topic of conversation .
The pandemic brought to light how crucial it was to have a steady supply of food and those willing to grow it . Backyard gardening was a boon for families in 2020 as supply chain issues wreaked havoc on food availability .
In this issue we wanted to explore how much farming has changed over the years and where and how our food gets to where it ’ s going .
We had a wonderful lunch and discussion at Solidago restaurant in Paint Lick . The restaurant is a multi-year project which aims to not only feed its community , but to help it grow and prosper .
At nearby , Lazy Eight Stock Farm we discussed with the owners how the practice of farming has evolved since our mostly agrarian days .
Speaking of farming evolution , AppHarvest is celebrating its recent harvest of lettuce from its Berea location and discussed plans for the future of the high tech ag industry .
We also spent a day at the historic Berea College Farm where students engage in outdoor learning laboratories .
I encourage you to enjoy this fall season and possibly make a trip to one of the great local farmers markets .
Fill a basket with some local produce and thank a farmer .
