“ It is a lot of work ,” Jeff said . “ It is more than just serving the meals downtown . It is the shopping , unloading , cooking , loading again , driving it , unloading it and serving it .”
Sharing stories over the past year , the couple reminisced about some challenges they shared , including scraping up pennies to feed , serving while sick or injured . “ But they all got fed ,” Jeff smiled . The people they have served have become family to the couple , who think of some as their own kids . “ We have had a wonderful time down there ,” Billie said .
“ All of these people are so good-hearted . I just love them all .” Most of the people they serve , Jeff and Billie know by name .
They serve a wide variety of people including some who are homeless , suffering drug addiction , working full time jobs , and anyone just trying to make sure their kids have some food to eat .
“ Only a portion of the people we serve are homeless ,” Jeff said . “ With this past year with COVID , a lot of the people we served were looking for ways to feed their families . Anyone who needed food would get food .
“ There would be times that we would be out of the food we cooked and someone would show up with a van full of kids and we would go get them some McDonald ’ s or something to eat because I am not going to let anybody ’ s baby go hungry .”
However , it is not just food the Alcorns help to supply . The couple also gives out clothes , shoes , hygiene products and necessities .
But if you ask them , the two always wish that they could do more . They even share aspirations to open a shelter one day which would have showers , laundry and sleeping facilities for anyone who needs it . Of course , they would provide the food . Until that time , both hope they can continue serving the city to address homelessness , and what the community offers to people in need , and how they respond .
Regardless , they plan to continue their mission of working for the Lord to feed people in need .
“ There has been great support and an amazing response that is so good , we like to call it , the Miracle on Main Street ,” Jeff said .
“ It has been an amazing journey , it really has . We have learned so much from these people ,” Billie said .
The Alcorns serve each week on Tuesdays doing both deliveries and setups in areas such as Turpin Drive , Smith Village , and Main Street in Richmond . They travel to Berea and throughout the county . For more information visit their Facebook page .
