May - June 2021
Late spring and early summer are usually times of celebration .
Not only are the many “ Little Kentucky Winters ” finally behind us , but with it perhaps , the darkest days of the coronavirus pandemic .
Our local businesses are slowly opening back up , restrictions are being lifted , live music is being played , and friends and family are making plans to be together ( in-person ) once more .
In addition to a more hopeful outlook on the pandemic , May also brings with it the joy of numerous students who will be turning their tassels this year in a more traditional graduation ceremony .
All four Madison County high schools and Eastern Kentucky University held in-person commencement ceremonies this year — a well-deserved reward to the county ’ s students who have had to bear the constant changes of the past year in education .
Father ’ s Day is just around the corner in June , and hopefully with it , more in-person celebrations and corny Dad jokes .
With grads and dads in mind , The Register staff wanted to highlight two local graduates who are accomplishing amazing things .
They are also pretty amazing dads .
On the cover is Harry Hunsucker , an EKU alum , and UFC fighter . Not only is “ The Hurricane ” causing a stir in the UFC — he is also channeling his success to help others in his community .
Chris Hayes , a Berea College graduate , is making his mark on one of America ’ s most famous streets as a Muppeteer on Sesame Street . Hayes is using his gift to help foster conversations among families about race and racism in the “ ABCs of Racial Literacy ” with the character , Elijah .
With summer around the corner , food trucks are in full swing in Madison County . We caught up with the owners Sammich Man Express , one of the county ’ s newest mobile eateries , about how they persevered through the pandemic .
Speaking of food , The Register staff spoke with Jeff and Billie ( BJ ) Alcorn of Life Rehab Ministries , who have worked tirelessly to curb hunger in Madison County by providing free meals every week to the community .
To celebrate the return of events and live music , we also highlight local music duo NightshadE . Niccola Cassetta and Erik Botsford say their musical partnership was written in the stars , and we couldn ’ t agree more .
