required to wash their hands, check in, complete their workout in at least two hours, and check out, according to Jacob Roberts, program director for the Telford YMCA center. “We have scheduled more staff that will be here throughout the day,” he added. “There are stations available for spraying down equipment.” Staff members at all three gyms will be wearing masks, and Richmond Athletic Club’s staff will be trained on how to use personal protective equipment, JR explained. Members, however, are not required to wear masks, according to Beshear’s guidelines that were announced in late May. Instead, masks are recommended. “It’s a risk on both ends,” April said. While working out, wearing a mask increases your risk of passing out, according to Evans and April. Also per Beshear’s instructions, saunas and kids clubs at all fitness centers were to remain closed as of the June 1 re-opening date. JR said he didn’t know when the Kids Club at Richmond Athletic Club will be able to re-open. Plus, Beshear’s guidance on re-opening includes members staying 6 feet apart from each other and only 33% of the maximum capacity of the buildings are allowed to be inside facilities at the same time. “We will be marking off certain pieces of equipment that don’t fall in that 6-foot requirement,” JR said. Anytime plans to ask people to use only one machine at a time instead of supersetting routines and will be watching video of the overnight hours to ensure members are adhering to the 6-foot guideline. Members at Richmond Athletic Club will also be handed a towel when they check in and are expected to wipe down equipment before and after using it. I’ve had a lot of people reach out to me and you can tell they’re struggling... Working out at home is so different than coming to an environment where you’re recognized. “In all honesty, we have been very structured with our members from the start of requiring them to clean the machines after they are used,” April explained. “We will ask them to clean them both before and after they use them as well as washing their hands or using hand sanitizer immediately when they come through the door.” Anytime, Richmond Athletic Club and the YMCA have all issued statements saying group workouts won’t be permitted, as well. Roberts said at the end of May, YMCA would still allow personal training in a room that is closed to everyone other than the member and trainer to allow for one-on-one sessions. About 1,200 people are signed up at Richmond Athletic Club, but JR said he doesn’t think it’ll be an issue for his gym to stay within that 33% of maximum capacity. “Gyms in general in the summertime become less busy because people are outside running, walking, hiking, mowing their lawn — there’s so much more for people to do during the summertime,” JR said. He also explained college students won’t be in town. “So we really don’t think it’s going to be something we can’t handle. We have over 12,000 square feet here, so if you do the math in regards to capacity, we shouldn’t have any problems at all staying within those guidelines.” YMCA can have 50 people in its facility at any given time because of the statewide guidelines, and Roberts announced on May 29 the gym would have reduced hours of 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Additionally, the lap pool is open, but must be reserved in advanced. At Anytime, Evans said the maximum capacity is 75 people, so only 25 people can be in the building at any given time. If the gym is full, members will be asked to wait in their cars and will be called when a member exits. To ensure everyone has time to get in their workouts, Anytime Fitness asks member to complete their workouts in one and a half hours. From 10-11 a.m. Monday through Saturday, Anytime will be open to highrisk members only, which includes those “with an increased risk of contracting the virus either due to age or medical condition,” the club’s owner, Nathan Fortlage, posted on Facebook. Another thing all the gyms’ employees shared is they can’t wait to see everybody again. “I’ve had a lot of people reach out to me and you can tell they’re struggling,” Evans said. “… Working out at home is so different than coming to an environment where you’re recognized. When somebody says, ‘Hey, it’s good to see you today,’ they recognized me. That’s what I’m excited to get back for.” The floor in the back half of Anytime Fitness was redone while the gym was closed. 260 Boggs Lane • Richmond (859) 623-4216 • McCaysPharmacy.com At McCay’s Total Care Pharmacy we specialize in medication planners to organize your daily medication doses at no extra charge.
