FOOD & DRINK
But out of the ashes, the Phoenix’s and BBH rose, thanks
to the fundraising efforts at Pally’s and other community
support.
The bar took another hit, literally, a couple of months ago
when a drunk driver crashed into their parking lot taking
out some fencing and a nearby telephone pole.
“I thought, ‘This place is cursed!’” she laughed jokingly.
Thankfully, no one was harmed and the driver did not hit
the bar itself.
And while each business has their ups and downs and tri-
als and tribulations, Raela says the one thing that sets BBH
apart from anywhere else in Richmond, is that they aren’t in
it for the money, but the people.
“We aren’t in it to get rich,” she said plainly. “This is a
home for a lot of people.”
One of Raela’s friends and BBH regular James Hopkins, a
former bar owner himself, agreed.
“Raela cares more about her customers than anything. She
is probably one of the best bar owners, bartenders I have
seen,” he said. “I have owned 14 bars and she is one of the
best. She’s the type of person as soon as you walk in the door
she knows your name, knows what you want to drink. The
bar is like a modern ‘Cheers’ and I have not seen anyone as
committed as her.”
BBH is open Monday through Saturday from 4 p.m. to 1
a.m. They are located at 103 Big Hill Avenue in Richmond.
