that won’t bust the budget
EDITOR’S NOTE: This story was complete before the current closures of many
facilities. However, we know things will open up and return to normal eventually.
With that in mind, we want you to be prepared for that day with this guide.
Madison County is chock-full of fun, free and cheap adventures to enjoy this
spring and summer, if you know where to look. Here’s a peek at some of the
best local deals the area has to offer.
Indoor Adventures
on the Cheap
The Richmond and Berea beaches of
the Madison County Public Library offer
weekly freebies by the pound for everyone.
Kids enjoy Richmond’s Master Builders and
Berea’s Lego Club, as well as Crafternoons
and STEAM workshops designed for kids,
tweens and teens.
Both branches offer free weekly afternoon
movies featuring a recent release, where
folks can bring their own snacks or kid-
dos can grab a free PowerUp! snack bag
through Berea Kids Eat, courtesy of Grow
Appalachia and the USDA.
And they have loads of adventures just
waiting to be checked out.
Movie lovers can also save at Cinemark
Movies with their early bird specials (first
matinee of the day) and Discount Tuesdays.
They have Snack Packs for any age that
include a drink, popcorn and a sweet for un-
der $6. Their Movie Rewards offer freebies
and discounts, too.
Madison County is also home to two
planetariums: the Hummel Planetarium at
EKU offers public shows for under $6 each,
with kids 3 and younger free. Berea Col-
lege’s new planetarium shows two public
shows every Sunday at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
for $5 adults, $3 children and seniors.
Get the Wiggles Out
Paradise Cove in Richmond will again
offer its free swim and Dive-In Movies at 7
p.m. on May 29 (Toy Story 4) and June 26
Princesses play with local children at one
of the Berea library’s many free events.
