Berea

College:

A college with purpose and opportunity

Berea College stands out as one of the nation’ s most distinctive liberal arts institutions, combining academic excellence with a mission rooted in opportunity and service. Founded in 1855, it made history as the first college in the Southern United States to welcome students of all genders and races— a commitment to inclusion that continues to shape its identity today.
Education Without Tuition
Berea College is known for its unique approach to affordability. Through
a combination of federal programs, grants and scholarships, every admitted student receives a full-tuition scholarship for all four years. Many students also receive assistance with room and board, making a high-quality education accessible regardless of financial background.
Students contribute to this model through Berea’ s work program, committing at least 10 hours each week to jobs across campus. This hands-on experience not only helps support the college but also builds valuable skills and a strong sense of community.
Academic Excellence with Real-World Impact
Berea offers 33 majors within a well-rounded liberal arts curriculum designed to prepare students for meaningful careers and engaged citizenship. Opportunities extend beyond the classroom, with funding available for study abroad and competitive programs like the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, which supports a year of international exploration after graduation.
The college attracts a diverse student body from
more than 40 states and over 70 countries, creating a vibrant, globally minded campus environment.
A Rich and Resilient History
Founded by abolitionist John Gregg Fee, Berea College has long been a leader in educational access. It welcomed both Black and white students from its early years, awarding its first bachelor’ s degrees in 1873.
While the college maintained integration from 1866 to 1904— and again after 1954— its mission has remained consistent:
