Constantly get all the tools in the toolbox—study the Alexander Technique, be a stage manager, study all the things so that when somebody says, “Can you…”, you say “Absolutely,” and you look in your toolbox and your tools are already sharpened. As opposed to just winging it. BE FEARLESS I would also encourage fearlessness and tenacity. You get a lot out of showing up and saying you want it. I can think of so many different sce- narios where I didn’t think something was going to go my way. But there’s something about showing up and going that extra mile acknowledging to yourself and the people around you and saying out loud, “I want this. Nobody wants it more than me,” and having the work to back it up. Not only did I want it but I did the home- work to deserve it. You can list your resume, but in the end it’s that bite, that hunger, that appetite for more is driving people forward. close and attainable made so much of a difference for me. I often try to go back to my hometown and have a premiere there or something that shows our big dreams [are possible]. They don’t feel so far away. Helping younger people feel like their big dreams are attainable is so impact- ful, whatever the profes- sion. SAY THANK YOU Saying that “Thank you!” is such a big thing. To acknowledge the people who are helping you along the way, be it teachers or whoever goes a long way. Even if you have an exception- ally well audition, having a hand-writ- ten note saying “I appreciated this opportunity!” can help you stand out. MOTIVATE YOURSELF Self-talk and self-motivation really needs to be vibrant and positive and live. When I’m at an audition, I’m in the hallways saying [affirmations] to myself. I’m always writing myself notes and letters. Have a dream board or whatever it may be to remind myself of the things that you want.
