HIS GRIND:
S
pike didn’t always know that he wanted
to pursue film until he was gifted film
equipment from a mentor in the ‘80s.
He took the camera and blazed a trail
that has inspired generations and paved
positions for fresh faces in film. As he
honed his craft and identified his creative
approach, he plotted to pursue a feature
film after film school. That film was She’s
Gotta Have It. Shot in 12 days (2 six-day
weeks) in the summer of 1986, the film was
the introduction to a 30-year legacy that
continues today.
