Longtime MAA member Benjamin Tory Staples MCA , 70 , of Ipswich passed away on Saturday , November 11 , surrounded by his loved ones . Ben was a talented artist who expressed his wonder at and love of life through both music and visual arts , especially photography , which he studied at Hampshire College . He approached every day as an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of his surroundings .
A natural musician , Ben was a self-taught singer and guitarist from whom songs flowed in the distinct colors of his spirit , both warm and blue . As a songwriter , he explored his sense of self , urgency for social justice , and the enduring nature of love .

Ben worked in arboriculture for over four decades , a career that was sustained by his respect for trees and dedication to their preservation . His professional legacy includes not only the countless trees he helped to nurture and flourish , but his indelible impression on coworkers , clients , and others in the industry . In a down-to-earth way , Ben generously shared his encyclopedic knowledge of trees with anyone who was interested , always guided by a concern for safety , protecting the natural environment , and establishing genuine human connections with everyone he met . Ben is survived by his wife , Deborah ; two sons , Sam and Walker ; and two brothers and their wives : Edward and Kate Staples and Richard Jr . and Betsy Staples . Among Ben ’ s innumerable gifts , his family will miss his wealth of worldly experience , sense of humor , and delicious cooking , but especially his unending love and kindness .
A celebration of Ben ’ s life will be announced at a later date .
