President ’ s Message

Hello MAA Members ,
In 1987 , the late Dr . Frances Holmes , Director of the Shade Tree Labs at UMass , published a paper titled “ Arboriculture as a Special Kind of Art .” In it he compares the beauty of shade trees to that of Fine Art , and as such puts the arborist in the role of musician , painter , or sculptor .
Lately I ’ ve been thinking about the public ’ s perception of our industry . Arbor- EXPO ’ 22 showcased every piece of modern equipment imaginable . Labor-saving equipment , like what was on display in Springfield , has allowed many of us to improve productivity and efficiencies . What is less evident , in my opinion , is the art of arboriculture - the simple tools that support our colleagues who continue to climb and preserve trees .
With this in mind , we are excited to introduce MAA ’ s first Climbing Skills Demo on August 9 in Walpole , MA ( details on front cover ). We view this new event as an opportunity to pause and allow the pendulum to swing back toward the Fine Art of tree climbing , pruning , and preservation .
Back to Dr . Holmes . He ends his paper with , “ Arboriculture is a wonderful profession , a profession devoted to bringing beauty to all people . Let us be proud of Arboriculture … proud that arborists care for their fellow people enough to bring everyone a source of emotional comfort in times when anguish , stress , sorrow , and a myriad lesser unpleasantness plaque us .”
I couldn ’ t agree more .
