Membership Matters
Happy Spring, MAA Members,
I’ m sure everyone is enjoying the longer days and warmer temperatures.
I just returned yesterday from ArborEXPO in Springfield. It was great to see so many familiar faces at the Expo and to make some new connections as well. For many of us, our day-to-day work keeps our heads down. Having the chance to share stories, memories, and ideas is what these events, and our association, are all about.
It was also exciting to welcome over 300 regional high school students to the show. Many of the schools traveled several hours to attend. The students were able to experience the full range of what a career in this industry can offer, from equipment to software, climbing trees to closing sales. Thanks to MAA Board Members Keith Bernard and Steve Vernon for speaking with the student groups about the rewards of working in tree care. Keith and Steve reminded them that a simple conversation can be the key to a first job offer or internship. For our part, MAA is always looking for ways to strengthen our connection to area horticulture and arboriculture programs, which are so valuable to the workforce pipeline.
Speaking of students, I’ m thrilled that we’ ll be hearing from two UMass graduate students at our April meeting. It doesn’ t get much more cutting edge than this. I love that these students will have a chance to impress some longtime members, and that our members can see the promise of the next generation.
And finally, Arbor Day of Service is fast approaching. While this is not a group celebration year, the event is no less significant. Arbor Day of Service brings together two of my favorite things: love of trees and love of community. If you’ re heading into your hometown to volunteer your expertise, let us know at the MAA office. We are proud to celebrate your good work.
