Arbor Day of Service 2020 (continued from page 1) We hope everyone planning a project will take a moment to visit MassArbor.org to tell us your plans. We want to promote your volunteer efforts. Editor’s Note: Last year, the MAA partnered with the Trustees at Appleton Farm in Ipswich, MA for an association-wide Arbor Day of Service celebration. We’ll plan on similar, large-scale group event in April 2021. Arbor Day Projects Here’s a sampling of some of the nonprofit sites that are planning projects, and asking for assistance from MAA volunteers, on Arbor Day of Service. To see the full list of community project ideas, visit MassArbor.org. Mass Audubon Education Center & Wildlife Sanctuary Belmont, MA We have a well-used preschool Nature Play Area where a dying red maple that has been shedding limbs over the stump jump area, white pines that require some thinning or removal, and two fallen pines that need to be cut to lie better for safety. On the larger scale, we have a need to remove potentially hazardous limbs over our All Persons’ Accessible Trail, cut back overgrowth around our Community Gardens, and there are large fallen trees that have caused us to temporarily re-route some of our other trails. Member companies and volunteers are invited to participate in a collaborative project that includes PHC, planting, safety pruning, and some removals based on risk assess- ment at this ever-evolving, educational epicenter of horticulture. The Balch House is one of Beverly’s oldest and most important properties. We would like to prune two larges maples and one dogwood, as well as remove a smaller maple. Additional work might include pruning and removals in the maple grove. It would make a huge impact to our small, private, nonprofit to receive this help.
