WHERE THE BEST IN THE TREE CARE INDUSTRY COME TOGETHER
Members Experience New ALH in Action
Sixty MAA members gathered at the MAA Arboriculture Learning Hub( ALH) on September 16 for an afternoon of hands-on education, and a first look at the possibilities Millborn Farm Reservation offers for future MAA programming.
For many attendees, it was their first visit, and the property did not disappoint. Members were struck not only by the beauty and diversity of the landscape, but also by the wealth of learning opportunities found throughout its fields, woodlands, and remarkable collection of mature trees.
Joann Vieira, Director of Horticulture for The Trustees, led members on an exploration of the property’ s trees and landscape. More than a traditional tree identification walk, Joann’ s tour wove together arboriculture, ecology, and history as she shared the agricultural story of Millborn Farm and explained how the property’ s varied uses over generations helped shape the landscape we see today. Along the way, participants examined an impressive variety of mature trees and discussed their identifying characteristics, history, and place within the larger ecosystem.
Tawny Simisky, UMass Extension Entomologist, brought another dimension to the day with a highly interactive, hands-on pest identification tour. Rather than simply talking about the pests arborists should be watching for, Tawny and participants found and examined actual insects on the property. The group discussed identification, emerging pest concerns, signs and symptoms to watch for, and current best management practices.
The opportunity to ask questions, share observations, and learn directly in the field made both sessions especially valuable. The enthusiasm and interaction among participants continued throughout the day.
We are grateful to Joann and Tawny for sharing their expertise, to The Trustees for their continued partnership, and to the MAA members who made our first workshop such a success.
