Women’s Suffrage: The Battle for Equality
In today’s society equality for men and women has been viewed as expected not as a struggle. On the contrary in the 1800’s and early 1900’s women had limited rights and decided that it was truly intolerable to have as many opportunities as men. Some limitations were lower wages than men, absence of right to vote and lack of political involvement. The lack of representation of women in politics was prejudiced and unfortunate. During political debates women weren’t even allowed the right to speak their minds about their future. They were even denied the opportunity to sit in the front of the room. They were placed in the back and basically sat and watched. It saddens me that women were not able to speak their mind about politics and important decisions in the country that could even change their future. If they were allowed to speak freely about politics, events in history may have even been different. Finally there was an opportunity to discuss women’s rights in the first assembly in Seneca Falls, New York in July 1848. These allowed women to discuss and listen to others speak their mind about women’s rights. The outline for the convention was the “Declaration of Sentiments”, which had ideas from the Declaration of Independence to support opinions in women’s rights. Sixty eight women and thirty two men signed the document in agreement. Women should at least have the right to vote. I hope that in the future women will be treated with equality and have the ability to be involved with our country. I think that there should be even more laws that should give women more equality. Without women, half of America isn’t being represented.
