Today ’ s inhabitants of the port city of Cagliari on the island of Sardinia invite visitors uphill to explore the high ground , in contrast to the inhospitable greeting that seafaring invaders once faced centuries ago in this heavily guarded citadel . Reaching key sites from the seaside boardwalk means a brief bus or taxi ride or meandering climb up cobblestone pathways . The longer route up the ascending pedestrian path is lined with cozy bistros , ancient churches , gelato shops , fashion boutiques and residential apartments .
At the Piazza Palazzo , the 14th-century City Hall and similarly aged Cathedral of Santa Maria share the square . Each are worthy of further investigation before continuing along to see the formidable twin towers . The Towers of San Pancrazio and the Elephant were built in the early 1300s to block intruders . Elephant Tower is marked with a lifelike pachyderm sculpture above a menacing spiked gate that still stands guard . The final ascent to the Bastione di Saint Remy , an imposing limestone fortification , is rewarded with mesmerizing views of the blue Mediterranean Sea as far as the eye can see .
