MAURICE, L’ ÎLE AUX LAURIERS THE AWARD-WINNING ISLAND OF MAURITIUS

Déjà couronnée pour ses hôtels, ses golfs et ses plages paradisiaques, la précieuse pépite de l’ océan Indien est entrée en fanfare dans le XXI ème siècle. Un souffle de modernité active ce bijou naturel: l’ envie d’ être partie prenante aux défis de son époque. Cet état d’ esprit, salué particulièrement cette année, porte ses fruits. Des classements très officiels font grimper Maurice sur la première marche du podium. Audelà de ses atouts touristiques incontestables, ses progrès dans le domaine politico-économicosocial lui valent la place de première de la classe sur le continent africain, devançant notamment l’ Afrique du Sud. L’ aéroport de Plaisance, qui peut accueillir près de 5 millions de passagers par an, remporte la médaille d’ or pour son confort et son architecture. Une nouvelle ligne Singapour-Maurice en fait une plate-forme majeure entre l’ Asie et le continent africain.
Les Mauriciens ont le bonheur de vivre dans une vraie démocratie. Selon le très sérieux magazine anglais The Economist, le pays est le plus démocratique d’ Afrique, et se classe dans le monde à la 18 ème place( devant la France 27 ème et l’ Inde 34 ème). Son atout précieux est sa richesse multiculturelle. L’ anglais est la langue officielle, le français y est parlé couramment, mais le créole constitue le fil le plus solide du tissu social, socle de la tolérance et des libertés individuelles. La voie est ouverte au progrès. De nouvelles villes naissent, les centres commerciaux poussent comme des champignons, les autoroutes s’ allongent … Ces signes visibles de prospérité économique poussent le confetti de l’ océan Indien dans le club des pays les mieux notés pour la liberté économique, en tête pour l’ Afrique, et 5 ème au classement mondial. Cerise sur le gâteau, Port-Louis, qui n’ était pourtant pas réputé pour sa sécurité, fait partie en 2016 des villes les plus sûres du monde. Souvenons-nous de la première édition de Porlwi by Light, un gros succès populaire, une foule déambulant dans les rues de la capitale et pas un incident. Les Mauriciens aiment leur pays, un amour qu’ ils savent partager …

The winds of modernity add a new dimension to this natural jewel: the desire to be ahead of its time. This mindset, hailed this year in particular, is bearing fruit. Official rankings have pushed Mauritius to the top of the podium. Beyond its irrefutable tourism assets, the on-going development in the socio-economic and political fields earns Mauritius first place on the African continent, even edging South Africa. Plaisance airport won a gold medal for its comfort, architecture and know-how, an airport capable of accommodating each year, up to 5 million passengers. The new Singapore-Mauritius route has turned it into a major platform between Asia and the
African continent. Mauritians have the privilege of living in a true democracy. According to the authoritative British magazine, The Economist, the country has the highest level of democracy in Africa and ranked 18 th on an international level, beating France ranked 27 th. Its precious asset is its multicultural richness whereby English is the official language, French is commonly spoken, but Creole represents the strongest thread of the social fabric and is the bedrock of tolerance and civil liberties. The pathway to progress has been paved. New cities are emerging, shopping malls are mushrooming and motorways are being extended... These visible signs of economic prosperity place this tiny dot in the Indian Ocean among the best-graded countries for economic freedom, ranking 1 st in the African region and 5 th internationally. To top it all off, Port-Louis, a city not necessarily known for its safety, was recognised as one of the safest cities in the world in 2016. Let us not forget the first edition of the Porlwi by Light event, a great and popular success where large crowds wandered the streets of the capital without the slightest incident. Mauritians love their country, and they know how to share this love...
