Lhistoire commence en 1844 à Vacoas. Le Gymkhana Club est créé par la marine royale anglaise pour les officiers de sa majesté. À cette époque, leur vie est plutôt calme sur l’ île, le golf occupera leur journée. Ce club à l’ anglaise, élitiste, garde encore aujourd’ hui un cachet unique. « C’ est le seul golf à Maurice avec un esprit club et un parfum historique. Les membres sont fidèles de génération en génération. On y croise aussi bien les gens de pouvoir que des grandes familles mauriciennes » raconte un joueur.
Le parcours de 18 trous, plutôt plat, entouré de bougainvilliers et de magnifiques arbres centenaires, est plutôt taillé à l’ ancienne, exigeant technique et coups précis. Ce club historique, si singulier sur l’ île, est la racine du golf à Maurice, une marque vivante de son patrimoine.
Avec ce troisième millénaire bien entamé, le pays a fait de ce loisir un fleuron en proposant des parcours de niveau mondial. Le golf de l’ île aux Cerfs, redessiné en 2014 par la star Berhnard Langer, a reçu le titre de meilleur golf au monde dans sa catégorie lors des prestigieux Golf Journal Travel Awards 2017. Les 8 parcours 18 trous répartis aux quatre coins de l’ île, du Tamarina à l’ Heritage Golf Club, sont parmi les plus réputés du circuit. Des passionnés viennent du monde entier fouler ces green d’ exception, dessinés entre mer et montagne par de grands champions.
Avec un nouveau golf de prestige qui ouvrira prochainement sur la côte nord, l’ île Maurice reste plus que jamais la destination phare des golfeurs.
The story goes all the way back to 1844 in Vacoas. The Gymkhana Club was initially created by the Royal Navy for Her Majesty’ s officers. At the time, their everyday life was rather peaceful back on the island, playing golf would be their only distraction. This exclusive English styled club, still harbours this uniqueness.‘ It is the only golf course in Mauritius with a“ Club Spirit” topped up by its strong print of history. The members are loyal, from one generation to another. The people we meet there vary from powerful leaders to prominent Mauritian families.’ This is the description made by a player.
This 18-hole golf course, rather flat, surrounded by bougainvilleas and splendid centenarian trees, is rather old-fashioned, thus challenging your technique and precision. This unique club nestled its way into history, being the first golf course in Mauritius, being a hallmark to its inheritance.
Beginning this third millennium with a flying start, the country made a flagship out of this hobby by offering tracks worthy of the greatest courses worldwide. The golf course at île aux Cerfs was redesigned in 2014 by Bernhard Langer himself, and was awarded the title of‘ Best Golf Course’ in the world in its category by the Golf Journal Travel Awards in 2017. The 8 most famous 18-hole courses are scattered across the island, starting from the Tamarina all the way to the Heritage Golf Club.
