What would you advise your clients at this time when everything seems to indicate that the financial markets are sustainably bullish ?
The VIX , an indicator of volatility in the US financial market , has only exceeded 70 on two occasions in its 30-year history : at the height of the 2008-2009 crisis and in March 2020 . Nevertheless , the concerted role of central banks has been decisive over the past year in stabilising and restoring confidence in the bond and equity markets . In March 2021 , i . e . one year later , the international equity indicators have significantly recovered with sometimes unexpected performances ! The Nasdaq 100 , the American index of technology stocks , recorded a 100 % growth between 20 March 2020 and 16 April 2021 . Meanwhile , the Dow Jones Industrial Average recorded a positive performance of 78 % over the same period ! Yet , “ nature ” also has its limits and according to the old stock market adage , “ trees don ’ t grow to the sky ”!
Also , the risk is to see a valorisation that is too excessive in relation to the economic reality . A simple comparison shows this : from 1997 to 2021 , world GDP in value terms ( with an increase in inflation ) has risen by at least 170 % – including a strong recovery this year –, whereas over the same period , the Dow Jones has risen by 430 %. That is 2.5 times more ! We will have to continue to be vigilant as the financial markets will remain sensitive to a sharp increase in inflation and rising government bond yields .
