If passed , Georgia and Pennsylvania would follow a path set by New Jersey , Washington State , and Illinois to implement additional productions for frontline workers . In addition to new state laws , some local jurisdictions are taking preemptive steps ; these include Santa Monica , Long Beach , Oakland , Sacramento , Miami Beach , Chicago , and Seattle .
Hospitality Trends
With the momentum of this movement continuing to grow , many hospitality sector leaders are looking to get in front of local and state requirements by updating their communications technology to meet the standards set by the 5-Star Promise . These standards promote " a voluntary commitment by AHLA members to enhance policies , trainings , and resources , including employee safety devices , that together are aimed and strengthening safety and security for hotel employees and guests ."
Established hotel groups are setting standards for added protections and looking to influence the industry as a whole . The requirements provided reflect each other in delivering similar specifics for compliance , geolocation , distribution , coverage , response flexibility , and training .
1 . Compliance
Three of the largest hotel groups in the US have mandated that associate alert devices be implemented into all owned and franchised hotels in the US within the next few years . To enforce these mandates , several groups have indicated that penalties will go into effect for non-compliance beginning in 2023 .
2 . Geolocation
Property groups are issuing specific requirements for alert systems around geolocation . Brands include room-level accuracy specifics to ensure reliable geolocation capability . These include conditions the device must instantly signal location when activated within a five-meter radius and continuously update the location throughout the building .
3 . Distribution
Brands universally require panic buttons to be provided to all full and part-time staff who are regularly in direct contact with guests in enclosed areas . These roles include engineering , housekeeping , and room service .
4 . Coverage
The coverage requirements generally include all guestrooms , public restrooms , spa treatment rooms , housekeeping closets , service elevators on guest floors , and any other area outlined by ordinance , as required by state or local legislation or a collective bargaining agreement .
Many properties are also directed to ensure the range and coverage areas of their selected safety device are throughout the scope of properties where necessary , such as meetings and ballrooms , fitness centers , or other places where the staffer might be alone .
5 . Response
To provide staff with confidence in any system , some groups offer specific requirements concerning the loudness of the alert . The fourth-largest US hotel chain requires that personal notification devices feature a minimum sound output of 130 decibels , which is reportedly equivalent to a jet take-off , the loudest rock concert ever recorded , or a gunshot at close range . Additionally , to be sure the system is fully operational at all times , provisions for regular testing are being outlined as well .
6 . Training
Without proper training , such systems will lack effectiveness . Some state requirements mandate training within a certain period of beginning employment . Some proprietors are including the training as part of their onboarding period with all new employees , including contractors , receiving training within the first 14 days of employment .
In deciding on implementing a solution for a property or group , it ' s essential to consider what will work best for your property .
