Diocletian’ s Palace in Split

Diocletian’ s Palace in Split

For a custom-built retirement residence, Emperor Diocletian’ s expansive final home in Split must be among the most remarkable post-career dwellings of the last few millennia. Thanks to porous limestone and careful construction, the 4 th century complex is still standing and now working a day job as a film location. Go downstairs and into the subterranean vault to see the Game of Thrones set of Daenerys Targaryen’ s dragon dungeon, then venture over to Peristyle Square which doubled as her Throne Room in the fictional location of Meereen. Stroll through the Golden Gate and along the northern wall of the Palace to see the dramatic 28-foot-tall wizard-esque statue of Gregory of Nin by Ivan Meštrovic, perhaps Croatia’ s most important sculptor.
Take a moment to join in Croatia’ s café culture by selecting a table on the Riva Promenade to linger over a cup of coffee before heading to Michelin-recommended Restaurant Krug. Head back to the Riva again after dinner for a leisurely stroll when the crowd is more locals than tourists.

WE RECOMMEND Hotel Vestibul Palace
Stay inside the fortress walls at the Hotel Vestibul Palace. This jewel box hotel of only seven rooms is named Vestibul after the nearby entrance to Diocletian’ s private chambers that boasts an open oculus at the dome. Interior walls date from the original Roman construction in 305 A. D., but the service, amenities and dining are all quite modern.
