Lick- Honest Ice Cream
Unusual has become a trademark for Austin businesses and when being different combines with a belief in supporting the local area, then things can really heat up- or in this case cool down.
Not too far down South Lamar, you’ ll discover a quirky, throw-back to the Fifties style of a shop, and the name well applies to the organic, natural products served- Lick. Honest Ice Cream is their slogan and it applies on all fronts, as all of the ingredients are within a 100 mile radius around Austin, and all of the ingredients are organic.“ Tiearmasu and carrots. is coming up. cilantro lime is very Austin, those two flavors are prefect for Austin. Most of the falvors are things I’ ve grown up with. I now appreciate that it is local... Anthony is the guy, he’ s the one creating it. He has a culinary background. Chad does the taste testing.” stated Anthony.
“ We chose austin to do this for a reason, not just because Anthony is from here, but we really appreciate that austin values what we do and Austin is unique, there are other cities that could do it, but the fact that you don’ t find chains here is the reason many people live here. Nothing’ s special, unique, but we consider to be doing what people in Austin like and fortunately, it’ s how we enjoy it.‘ Austin does it better than anybody else!’” commented Chad.
“ Yes, the root is the same, utilizing local ingredients and fresh items, and even though we’ re from different parts of the country, the idea is the same. the difference is what is actually in season. It’ s a simple idea. It’ s worked out well, we met in NYC, Anthony did focus more on local items growing up.” continues Chad when asked about their differing cultures.
What do you believe encourages people to frequent Lick over other local ice cream shops?“ The fact that we produce items in small batches, we use locally sourced items. Very minimal ingredients and you can tast the difference in the ice cream. We only use the best and it makes a difference.”
Has your commitment to using locally grown items been a challenge or has it opened up new connections that also helps build the concept of buying local into the mindsets of your customers, which also encourages them to do the same?“ It’ s not difficult at all, the only challenge is we can only use what is available when it is available. Customers get used to a particular flavor and then it’ s gone. it’ s the nuance of being seasonal, but it’ s also very rewarding and sparks creativity. It’ s kinda of fun actually.” stated Anthony upon the final question.
