director.%His%prolific%career%was%tragically%cut%short%by%and%experimental%procedure;%
know%as%an%orbital%lobotomy,%performed%in%1935.%Duke%Blue,%often%called%Blouie%by%
his% friends,% has% been% noted% the% original% one;hit% wonder.% His% tune% “Cairo”% was%
recorded% in% 1927% and% became% a% hit% over% night,% however% Blouie% would% never%
experience% success% again.% His% Orchestra% “The% Duke% Blue% Jass% Band”% performed% an%
expansive% repertoire% that% included% popular% songs,% folklore,% classical,% Latin,% polkas%
and% dance% hall% numbers.% % The% group% had% a% reputation% for% starting% riots;% the%
incendiary%“Jungle”%beat%radiating%from%the%bandstand%made%the%men%feisty%and%the%
women% weak% in% the% knees.% Although% his% career% was% short% lived,% Blouie% left% behind%
