EVERY CHILD SUCCEEDS— NEW ACADEMIC SUPPORT SERVICES
LUSD is continuously seeking ways to expand learning opportunities for all students to support a rich and success-filled learning experience. This is the second year that the district has implemented new and exciting programs. These programs seek to support students by building on the effective daily classroom instruction.
Enriching Student Learning through Arts Education
LUSD students are amongst the brightest and artistically talented in the Central Valley. To develop students’ artistic abilities, the District has taken action to consistently offer arts education in the classroom. Through a partnership with ― The Muse ‖ all TK-5 students receive art lessons in painting, drawing, ceramics and printmaking activities with an arts-trained teacher. These lessons provide students a learning experience that develops critical thinkers while being engaged in creative art activities. In addition, many outstanding LUSD teachers integrate art activities with classroom projects and instruction.
S. T. R. E. A. M Summer Academy
The S. T. R. E. A. M Summer Academy is once again being offered to students in the district. The academy offers high interest, project-based learning experience. The TK – 6th grade intervention program is a twenty-day summer institute that focuses on grade level thematic, project – based study of Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Math. The student-to-teacher ratio is maintained at 20 students to 1 teacher. Students are invited to enroll based on their most recent reading / literacy scores; TK selection is based on teacher recommendation. The summer program for grades 7 and 8 differs in that it provides students a unit recovery opportunity to meet their graduation unit requirement.
Academic Intervention / Support
Each school offers the services of two clinicians who provide intervention and enrichment instructional support. The clinicians provide services to students who are struggling with reading and / or mathematics both during and after school. The majority of students working with the clinicians are English language learners who are new to the district or who have been struggling with English language acquisition.
Summer DLA Academy( Grades 7-8)
Incoming 7th & 8th grade DLA students will now have the option of completing the program’ s requirement over the summer. The summer alternative will consist of 20 days plus three Saturday sessions during the school year. Students who take advantage of this option, will have the opportunity to take other electives during the regular school year. The Program will continue to be offered during the year as well.
