Step One: Enrollment History and Student Progressions
Student Progression
Kindergarten
The Student Progression (SP) method simply advances the existing students one grade per year. By utilizing this basic
methodology we get an idea of what the enrollment would look like without the influence of any factors such as birth rates
providing the number of new Kindergarten students or new housing developments. SP is the basic building block for the
projection methodologies examined in the Study. Using the student progression trend assumes that there will be the same
number of sixth graders this year as there were fifth graders last year. This base model is then modified as described in
Steps Two and Three.
Kindergarten class sizes have a large impact upon future enrollments in this methodology as Kindergarten class sizes result
in larger or smaller overall enrollments as they are repeated through the years. Figure 2 illustrates the historical Kindergarten enrollment within the District. Note that these figures include both standard Kindergarten students as well as Transitional Kindergarten.
