The Prusso Child Development Center building serves the younger children within the City of Livingston. The east side of the building has a set of classroom spaces that are used daily for preschool education. The remainder of the building is not utilized on a regular basis. The rest of the building has a large multi-purpose building with a stage, a food preparation Kitchen and another set of classrooms. The building was designed and constructed in the early 1970’ s and most of the material finishes and conditions are vintage 70’ s style.
The stage was used in the past when the adjacent school was used as Livingston Middle School. However since a new middle school was opened in 2000, the stage is rarely used. The stage area is too small to be an effective stage for performances and events. To make the stage more usable it would need to be larger in area and include space for stage storage.
In the vision plan, the existing stage would be converted to stage storage, and a new stage with proscenium walls would be added into the existing multi-purpose space. The proposed vision plan has a stage that is 1,300 square feet and the stage storage space would be about 800 square feet. The stage storage area would be equipped with large cabinets for music equipment and a large sink for cleaning out instruments. The stage storage would also allow for the use of stage props to be brought back and forth onto the stage for performances.
The existing Multi-Purpose room is about 5,000 square feet, and after the stage is carved out, the remaining space would be around 3,200 square feet. The Multi-Purpose Room and new stage could be used for school plays, celebrations, staff development meetings, workshops, community events and Board meetings. The adjacent parking lots for the baseball field and the elementary school could be used for overflow event parking. The large open MPR space would need to include some acoustical design elements, including a sound system and a stage lighting system for effective use.
The existing parking lots require a new slurry seal and restriping. The accessible parking stalls are no longer in compliance with the code, and need to be upgraded for code compliance; new signs and striping. A new parking lot would be added to the west end of parking lot 1, and this would be used to service the County Office facility.
