Chub Bait
1) Salmo Butcher. This small
diver is perfect for when
Gareth wants to present a lure
under the surface. Ideal when
the chub are chasing fish.
2) Bomber Shallow A. The
shallow diver Gareth employs
as a wake bait to mimic small
mammals crossing the river.
3) Arbogast Jitterbug. A great
and well-tested surface lure
that creates lot of comotion
thanks to its concave
front lips and jointed body.
This imitates an injured
or struggling fish or small
mammal.
4) An oddity picked up
by Gareth specifically for
targeting chub. It casts
horribly, but has accounted
for Gareth’s biggest-ever lurecaught chub.
couple of fish interested is a
bonus; if one wants this meal
they will have to take it before
the other does, it forces them
into a decision.
Both fish swim up and towards
the Bomber that’s now halfway
across the river, and then one
makes its move.
Smash! The lure disappears in
the spray, the line tightens, the
hooks have found their mark.
The clutch on his Shimano
Stradic sounds briefly before
the fish is turned and heads
for the bank. At the waiting net
another burst of energy sees
the chub look for the cover of
a clump of reeds. Experience
prevails, though, and the fish
is stopped in its tracks and
enveloped in the folds of the
net before it can think about its
next move.
At over 5lb and some 65cm it’s
the fish we were after. Its huge
mouth could have swallowed
two of these lures side by side.
An incredible creature, fighting
fit and glistening in the sun.
Target achieved it’s slipped back
as we pat Gareth on the back
and get on our way. L U R E
