From receiving the Sportsman of the Year award to conquering an unnamed mountain , the passion Samuel Chin possessed as a 16 year old canoeist never lost its intensity but only grew more potent as he led a team to the peak of a

Himalayan mountain at Karcha Nala . Unafraid to dream big , Samuel shows that one can realise one ’ s dream so long as one possesses passion and is willing to work hard towards that goal .

On 20 September , alumnus , Samuel Chin Jia Kai ( Class 2007 ), made news for scaling new heights - literally .

Samuel is known in the SJI community for his athletic abilities . He was awarded the SJI Old Boys Association ( SJIOBA ) Sportsman of the Year 2007 for canoeing . This year , he has made the news for an even greater achievement . He , along with his mountaineering club members at Singapore University of Technology and Design ( SUTD ), reached a 6,056m virgin peak in India . Currently , they are in the midst of obtaining the approval of the locals in the mountainous area to name the Himalayan peak after their university .
While studying at SUTD , Samuel , fuelled by his passion for mountain-climbing , established a mountaineering club . Together with the other members , they took on the daunting task of climbing an unnamed mountain , as a way to make a name for their new university . After his achievement , Lumen had the opportunity to interview him about his planning process , his inspiration , and his motivation .
