I remember the row of market stalls along the fields , near the roadside , where we used to enjoy a plate of mee rebus – it was very delicious … In the school canteen , the mee goreng costs just 10 cents , and we really enjoyed it .

I was a member of the school band that played at the Padang when Singapore merged with Malaysia in 1961 . I remember that we formed up at 5am and marched down from our campus at Bras Basah Road to the Padang .

I remember playing soccer on the field across the Bras Basah campus , as well as eating rojak at the nearby Waterloo Street , which has now become SMU .
