From Fledgling to Future City: Urban Planning at the Singapore City Gallery
Celebrating Culture Through Sound: Performing Arts-Based Learning( PABL)
At the URA Singapore City Gallery, students experienced an engaging exploration of urban planning, sustainability, and heritage conservation. The gallery traced Singapore’ s transformation from a 1960s port city to a modern, liveable metropolis.
Through a multimedia show, students discovered the city’ s hidden urban systems covering transport, energy, waste, water, and land use, and the challenges planners face in managing limited resources while ensuring sustainable growth.
Walking through displays of conserved buildings and heritage districts, students reflected on how Singapore preserves its history while planning for the future. They also examined key planning themes such as green spaces, housing, mobility, and heritage.
This learning journey helped students connect classroom knowledge from Geography, Mathematics, Literature, and Citizenship Education in their mother tongue languages to real-world urban strategies. It offered valuable insight into how thoughtful planning shapes Singapore’ s present and future, giving students a deeper appreciation for the city’ s economic and environmental sustainability efforts.
The fourth learning journey, part of the lower secondary music curriculum and supported by the Ministry of Education, brought Year 2 students to the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music for a Performing Arts-Based Learning( PABL) experience. Set in a professional arts venue, the programme featured a live performance that celebrated Singapore’ s multicultural musical traditions.
Guided by music educators, students reflected on how diverse musical practices express cultural identity while reinforcing shared values. They discovered how music serves as more than entertainment; it is a medium for connection, storytelling and unity in diversity.
This journey promoted social and cultural sustainability by encouraging students to embrace differences and appreciate the richness of Singapore’ s cultural fabric.
Together with earlier learning journeys focused on Ecology, History, and Urban Planning, this experience deepened students’ understanding of sustainability in Singapore. It also supported our school’ s mission to nurture informed, compassionate thinkers who learn through realworld, interdisciplinary experiences rooted in the local context.
