Into the Rainforest: Geography and English in the Nature Reserves
33
The Year 1 learning journey took students into Singapore’ s nature reserves and parks to explore the question: Why does where matter? Codesigned by the Geography and English teams, this interdisciplinary experience connected scientific investigation with creative expression.
Using fieldwork tools, students gathered data on canopy cover and undergrowth density, learning how environmental conditions shape plant adaptations. Through observation and sketching of unusual plant parts, they explored how physical traits relate to ecological function, encouraging critical thinking about survival and adaptation. Another activity activated their senses— sight, sound, and smell— as they crafted descriptive phrases for English reflective writing, translating natural experiences into vivid language.
This journey deepened students’ appreciation of Singapore’ s ecosystems and biodiversity, while also highlighting the importance of green spaces in the country’ s liveability and sustainability. It encouraged students to see nature not only as a subject of study but also as a source of inspiration and a key part of Singapore’ s identity.
